Clot
Found on the feathered edge of the slide as they are larger. Looks like purple “goobers” with some platelets visible. Unlike in EDTA clumping, fibrin strands can usually also be seen and individual platelets can not be counted.
Platelet account usually appears falsely decreased or is accompanied by flags. Represents an unacceptable specimen. Remember to always check the tube for visible clots first if suspected! If there is a large clot, there may not be enough platelets left to see clumps on the slide.

EDTA Clumping
May be seen as large platelets clumps at feathered edge or smaller clumps in peripheral of smear depending on severity. Unlike in clots, individual platelets can be counted.
EDTA clumping can cause the analyzer to underestimate platelets. It is caused by an in vitro reaction of the platelets with the anticoagulant in lavender tubes. Found on the feathered edge of the slide as they are larger. Looks like purple “goobers” with some platelets visible. Unlike in EDTA clumping, fibrin strands can usually also be seen and individual platelets can not be counted.
