Microcytic anemia is characterized by microcytes: red blood cells with a mean cell volume (MCV) less than 80 fL. When compared to the nucleus of a lymphocyte, microcytes will be smaller. Decreased cell volume is caused by delay in erythrocyte maturation from issues with hemoglobin synthesis.
