Target Cells

Target cells are bell-shaped instead of being biconcave due to excess membrane. Because of this, they are also known as codocytes, as the Greek word for bell is “kodon.” On a slide, the bell flattens out to look like a target.

Target cells are seen in Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA), thalassemia, liver disease, & hemoglobinopathies. Additionally, they may be artifactual due to slow slide drying, high humidity, or excess EDTA.
