A few band neutrophils (commonly referred to as “bands”) in peripheral blood are normal. Increased amounts of these immature neutrophils, however, may indicate infection, inflammation, or myeloproliferative disorders.
Appearance
Band neutrophils have a pink cytoplasm with specific granules. The nucleus lacks segmentation and has uniform thickness, usually forming a “C” or “S” shape. Chromatin is looser than that of segmented neutrophils.
